Navratri 2026 Outfit Guide: 9 Colours and Garba Looks
Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October and runs for nine nights until Monday, 19 October, with Dussehra on Tuesday, 20 October. For most of India that means nine evenings of garba and dandiya, nine chances to dress up, and one very real question every afternoon: what am I wearing tonight?

Navratri 2026 colours, day by day
Each day of Navratri is linked to a form of the Goddess and a colour. The order changes every year because it follows the weekday Navratri starts on. For 2026 it runs like this:

Planning tip: you do not need nine full outfits. Three or four good base pieces in neutral shades, plus a dupatta or jacket in the colour of the day, will cover all nine nights.
What to wear for garba: comfort first
Garba is a dance, often for three or four hours at a stretch. The best-looking outfit is useless if you cannot move in it or you are too hot by the second round. A few rules make the difference:
- Flare over fit. A chaniya with a wide, circular flare swirls beautifully and gives your legs room. Avoid anything tight at the knee.
- Breathable fabric. Cotton and cotton blends stay cool through a long night. Save heavy silks for the puja, not the dance floor.
- Weight matters. Heavy mirror work and dense embroidery look stunning but get tiring by midnight. Keep the heaviest pieces for the last few nights, or the ones you are only there to watch.
- Secure the dupatta. Pin it at the shoulder and the waist so it does not slip every time you turn.
- Flat footwear. Many garba grounds are uneven. Juttis, kolhapuris or flat sandals are far easier than heels.
Navratri outfit ideas for women
1. The classic chaniya choli
Nothing says Navratri like a chaniya choli: a flared skirt, a fitted blouse and a contrast dupatta. Pick a base colour you can re-style, then change the dupatta to match the colour of the day.
2. Lehenga with a lighter blouse
A festive lehenga works just as well for garba if the skirt has enough flare. Pair it with a simpler cotton blouse to keep it comfortable for dancing.
3. Kurti with a flared skirt or dhoti pants

4. A saree for the puja days

1. Kediyu with churidar or dhoti
The traditional Gujarati kediyu, a short, flared top with a gathered waist, is made for garba. It swirls when you turn and it keeps you cool. Pair it with a churidar or a dhoti and a bright bandhani safa if you want the full look.
2. Kurta with a Nehru jacket
A plain cotton kurta with a Nehru jacket in the colour of the day is the easiest way for men to follow the colour calendar without buying nine kurtas. Swap the jacket, keep the kurta.
3. Short kurta with jeans
For casual evenings, a short printed kurta over slim jeans is comfortable and still festive. It is the practical choice for weeknight garba after work.

Children love Navratri, and they dance hard. Choose light cotton chaniya cholis for girls and simple kediyu or kurta sets for boys. Skip scratchy embellishment at the neck and waist, and pick a size with a little room so they stay comfortable all evening.
