How to Find Your Right Clothing Size Online in India
The single biggest worry about buying clothes online is fit. You cannot try it on, sizes change from one brand to the next, and a medium from one seller can fit like a large from another. Most returns come down to this one problem.
The good news is that finding your right size online is a skill, and it takes about ten minutes to learn. Measure yourself once, learn to read a size chart, and you will get it right far more often than by guessing.
Why "I am always a medium" does not work online
There is no single Indian standard that every seller follows. One brand's M might be cut for a 36 inch chest, another's for 38. Fabric changes things too: a cotton kurta has no give, while a knit top stretches. That is why your usual size is only a starting point. Your actual measurements are what matter.
What you need
- A soft measuring tape (a tailor's tape, not a metal one)
- A mirror, or someone to help
- Light, fitted clothes, or measure over innerwear
- A notebook or your phone to write the numbers down
Keep the tape snug but not tight, and keep it level all the way round.
How to take your measurements
Chest or bust
Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape straight across your back and under your arms. Breathe normally; do not hold your breath.
Waist
Measure around your natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button. For trousers and jeans, measure where you actually wear the waistband, which is often lower.
Hip
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Shoulder
Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the other across your upper back. This matters most for shirts, blazers and fitted kurtas.
Length
For kurtas and tops, measure from the highest point of the shoulder down to where you want the hem to fall. For trousers, measure the inside leg from the crotch to the ankle.
Write your measurements down once and save them on your phone. You will use them every time you shop.
How to read a size chart
Every product on ClothesBazzar has a size chart on the product page. Use it like this:
- Check the unit. Charts are in inches or centimetres. Make sure you compare like with like.
- Check what is being measured. Some charts list your body measurements; others list the garment measurements. A garment chest of 40 inches on a 38 inch chest means about two inches of ease, which is a comfortable regular fit.
- Match your most important measurement. For tops and kurtas, go by chest or bust. For trousers and skirts, go by waist and hip.
- When you fall between sizes, size up, especially in non-stretch fabrics like cotton and linen. A little extra room can be tailored; a garment that is too small cannot.

Buying for kids
Children's sizes are usually listed by age, but children of the same age come in very different sizes. A few rules help:
- Measure the child, then compare with the chart, instead of trusting the age alone
- Size up slightly, since children grow quickly and a little room lets the outfit last longer
- Check the length of kurtas and frocks so they do not trip on them
- Choose soft, breathable fabric like cotton for anything they will wear for hours
Fabric changes the fit
Two garments with the same measurements can fit very differently depending on the fabric.
- Cotton and linen have almost no stretch and can shrink slightly on the first wash. Size up if you are between sizes.
- Knits, jersey and stretch denim give with movement, so your usual size or even a snug fit works.
- Silk and georgette drape rather than stretch. Follow the chart closely.
